For Iranian companies, Iran’s growing integration into the world economy offers both the challenge of increased international competition and new opportunities for growth and development. While the Western press has concentrated almost exclusively upon the investment opportunities available in Iran’s petroleum sector, tourist trade, and its consumer markets—for Iranian companies the strategic choices are complex. Should Iranian companies focus primarily on their domestic market, or should they venture abroad? Should they create alliances and joint ventures with foreign companies, or should they develop independently? I shall draw upon the experiences of businesses in other countries that have emerged on to the world stage—including India, Korea, Indonesia, Poland, Vietnam, and Brazil—for guidance on how to navigate the opportunities and threats of internationalization. I shall look particularly at how Iranian companies can best leverage local resources and knowledge to build competitive advantage.
